Tiles are an eye-catching addition to any room, but it is important to know the best way to keep them clean without damaging them, or compromising their appearance.
Do:
- Ensure that the room you are cleaning is well ventilated
- Wear gloves and cover your clothing, or wear something that can withstand a bit of elbow grease
- Use soft damp cloth or rag to wipe the “face” of the tile
- Keep things simple with a mix of bicarb soda and water, ammonia, or bleach and water (for white tiles), to get at dirt and mould.
- Use a soft-bristle brush for cleaning in between and around tiles
- Invest in a professional grout-cleaning tool for stubborn dirt or tricky corners.
- Brush clear nail polish into any scratches on glass tiles or glazed ceramic tiles to fill them
Don’t:
- Use a scourer or tough brush to scrape away mould or stains as these will scratch the tile.
- Use someone’s toothbrush or nail brush for cleaning mould and grime
- Use bleach on unglazed tiles
- Assume that the only way to get at that tricky grout is to dismantle the tile altogether!
- Let loose or cracked tiles go un-repaired

There are a few different tile surfaces, but in this post we will look at the most common:
Ceramic Tiles.
- To clean ceramic tiles, it is best to use a high grade bathroom chlorine and ammonia bleach cleaner. If you are working in a confined space, it would be wise to open a window or door to allow sufficient ventilation, as some cleaning products can give off an extremely toxic odour.
- To clean the grout between tiles, you can purchase a specific cleaning tool which is just the right shape to wipe along between the tiles and swiftly remove all grime.
- If your tile surface is extremely dirty, it may be advisable to spray and leave for a few minutes for the product to really penetrate and do its job, so you get a better result.
- Make sure to give the area a really good rinse with clean fresh water to remove any traces of chemicals after cleaning.
Tile Cleaning can become a serious issue, because they suffer from many problems such as:
- Scratches and abrasions from dirt not being cleaned off
- Grout Stains
- Bacteria build-up
- Colour loss
Some of these problems (such as grout stains and colour loss) require a professional cleaning company to restore the tiles to a good condition. If acted upon early, tiles can be cleaned, and any defects in the tile can be fixed instead of them becoming permanent. With tiles, prolonged neglect can cause serious issues.
